Tenerifes Cultural and Natural Treasures
Tenerife is a perfect destination for scenery, culture and architecture. In Santa Cruz, the 16th century Church of Conception is the city's oldest house of worship. The Museum of Nature and Man (Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre) is a stunning collection of objects dating back before Spanish rule. At the very centre of the island is the highest point on Spanish turf, the 3,718m Mount Teide. This was a once-active volcano (though now dormant)which last erupted in 1909. The volcano and its large surroundings comprise Teide National Park. The park provides spectacular views of the valley and many rock formations in the surrounding area.
Tenerife Gomera Rock festival
The smaller island of Gomera off the coast of Tenerife hosted its first Gomera Rock festival in August this year. Join the Wine Bus on Tenerife
Tenerife may not be as famous for its wine as the Bordeaux region of France or the Barossa Valley in Australia, but the island has several wine producing communities and numerous wineries that are open to the public. In order to make the public more aware of the wine producers and make access to them easier, the island organised a comprehensive programme for 2009 that is known as the 'The Wine Bus'. There were seven wine making municipalities taking part and a typical programme would include a visit to a wine municipality visitor centre, two winery visits, concluding with a restaurant lunch with wine tasting. The tours could either be self guided or could be taken via the transport provided and specialist staff guiding.
