Zante, or Zakynthos as the Greeks call it, is the third largest of the Ionian Islands, and is the one number choice for many when it comes to planning their summer holiday. An abundance of affordable flights to Zante may have triggered the influx of tourists from the UK and elsewhere, but it's the unique charms of the island that keep them coming back.
Zakynthos is a great place to visit at least once in your lifetime. It is known for pleasant climate, unique culture and some excellent tourist attractions such as The Helmis National History Museum, Monastery of Panagia Anafonitria and several scenic beaches. Zakynthos is known world wide for its wine making. In fact if you truly want to enjoy wine you need to visit Zakynthos during their wine festival. The wine feast is organized during the last week of August through to the first week of September. Throughout the festival you will be tasting excellent wines produced by the residents of the island.
The Zakynthian carnival is one of the most fun filled and zealous festivals of the world. The beginning of the celebration of Zakynthos Carnival dates back to the time when Venetians ruled the island. It is also said it is based on imitation of the Commedia dell Arte organized by Italians and the Venetian carnival. One of the Commedia dell Arte performances is proved to have occurred in Crete during 1611.
