Santorini is in fact the biggest of a group of five small islands, two of which are volcanic. Originally just one island until a volcanic eruption in split them into their individual positions, Santorini covers an area of 73 square kilometres and is 120 nautical miles from Piraeus.

For runners, triathletes, and cyclists, summer temperatures in excess of 30 degrees Celsius are not perfect conditions, but neither are the cool, wet and rainy days of a typical British autumn. The island of Lanzarote offers the opportunity of better weather conditions, with autumn rain very rare and average daytime temperatures of between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius throughout September, October and November. Music festivals are very popular on the island of Majorca and its smaller neighbour Menorca. On Mallorca it seems that even smaller towns are organising their own summer music festivals, with jazz proving to be one of the more popular styles. On Menorca, festivals are equally popular and one of the biggest is the annual Music Festival of Mahon, which features mainly classical performances. This festival may be smaller than some of its Mallorcan equivalents, but the quality of the performers is very high.
