If you spend your lunch-break googling last-minute flights to Lanzarote and day-dreaming about that depressingly distant summer break, then it's time for you to think about getting a little winter sun this year. It's often more affordable to travel during the winter months, you see a different side of your favourite summer spots, and you'll even avoid the perennial airport queues. So if you're looking for the perfect way to relax on holiday, read on for a five step stress-busting guide to Lanzarote.
Some retail therapy
If you're going away to forget about work for a while, then we recommend you head for Charlie's bar on the trendy Puerto del Carmen marina. With late-night shopping and a thriving bar scene, the marina is the perfect place to go for a little retail therapy. Alternatively, for a drink with a little history, the historic winery of Bodega Stratus in Yaiza is a peaceful place off the beaten track where you can sample local wines and buy a few souvenirs of a truly excellent vintage.
Beach bliss
Next, if you're feeling up to it, why not try some of Lanzarote's beaches? World renowned for sun and clean white sand, the beaches in this part of the world are second to none. Head for the Playa del Papagayo for surf, sun and watersports, or for a more mellow afternoon out try Famara beach.
Caverns and caves
If you're looking for something that's truly a world away from the stresses and strains of normal life, then Lanzarote's incredible network of ancient volcanic caves are the perfect antidote to the everyday. Los Hervideros are the most otherworldly, but the Jameos del Agua, in whose caverns sit a quirky gift shop, cafe and various small exhibits, are also worth a visit.
Adrenaline rush
Get active to fight stress by trying scuba diving, surfing, or climbing the Montana Roja. As a reward for all your work, the island's world-famous Mirador del Rio is without a doubt Lanzarote's most breathtaking view.
Bargain hunting
Finally, hit the charming Teguise Market for a little flea-market fun. Barter for a bargain or browse for local crafts, jewellery and textiles, and take a little of your holiday calm home with you.
