For the purpose of relaxation and the getaway adventure that loads of people love, countless numbers and faces of places cover the pages of internet and travel guide magazines. If there is the island of Palawan for the Philippines and there are the beaches in Miami at Florida U.S.A., then there is the island of Skiathos, the pride of Greece.
The island of Skiathos is one of the known islands of prestige beaches and party goers who love adventure and the chill vibe of the sun. As little as it could be, this small-scale destination is the one of the top locations containing top-notch Greek sandy beaches.
Not just for the purpose of gazing and taking a dip in the glittering waters of this place, there are other events that made people all over the world take flights to Skiathos .
A popular event held annually during the 15th of August is the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin where a lot of eating, drinking and other merry making take place. This event is one of the greatest festivities especially for Roman Catholics. This is in remembrance and adoration for the ascension of the Virgin Mary to heaven in both body and soul.
All Greek places give pilgrimage to this event since the Virgin Mary is the known protector of all the chapels in Greece. Another great event held in Skiathos also held annually during September 6 is the Katsonia Festival. This served as a commemoration of the sunken submarine by the name of Lambros Katsonis. It lost more than thirty men during the battle with cut off German troops. In the said feast, a grand Mass and the throwing of flower wreaths out to sea became the custom of both locals and other gathering tourists at the place. These symbolize the sympathy and the giving of honou to the courageous men who lost their lives during the said battle.
A re-enactment of the sinking scene is also done still to remember and respect both those that died and those who were able to escape the horrendous tail. The Panigiraki festival is another commemoration event done for the memory of Saint George or Agios Georgios who is the known protector of the town of Arachova, a known place where the festival usually took place. This is a wow place offering more than just pure wild escape activities.
