Crete During September

fresh box of sardines

Visitors to Crete during September will not only have the fabulous autumn weather to enjoy. A selection of cultural events continues throughout the month.

Sardine Festivals are not unique to the Algarve coast of Portugal, where many towns celebrate the fishing industry that sustained their region for many years. Crete also has a long sardine fishing tradition and that is celebrated each year in early September by the town of Chania when a Sardine Festival is held on the city's Nea Hora ( Nea Chora, Nea Xora) beach, just a short walk from the Old Town. This is a stunning beach, so close to the city yet benefiting from soft golden sand and, if you are lucky, some amazing sunsets.

The finale to the 2009 summer season was celebrated with an International Day of Tourism on 27th September at the Agios Nikolaos lake. This was an evening event with musical performances by drumming outfit Simpaignia Band and other acts. The town of Aghios Nikolaos is representative of the modern face of tourism on Crete, with its stunning lake-front situation providing spectacular views in front of it's cosmopolitan facilities. There's a wide choice of cafes, restaurants and tavernas and of course the small open-air theatre that hosts various cultural events throughout the year. The lake that defines this town is very deep and local legend originally thought it was bottomless. In the late nineteenth century a channel was created to link the lake to the sea and allow it to be used a harbour for smaller boats.

Also in Agios Nikolaos on 19th September was a rock, blues and souls concert by the band Bad Language, who perform in both Greek and English. This concert was free to attend and took place at the Ammos beach at 9pm.
