For the ultimate holiday escape, you don't have to travel to the other side of the world. Flights to Lanzarote can have you living the Robinson Crusoe life in only four and a half hours. Whilst Lanzarote may conjure up visions of tourists and hectic night-life - and there is plenty of that, if you want it - many people don't realise just how much of the island remains authentic. For those who like to visit places that are a little bit different and off the beaten track, Lanzarote has plenty of hidden treasures.
If you're looking for somewhere a bit different to stay and eat on Lanzarote's mainland, check out the unique building known as Lagomar. In the small town of Nazaret, carved out of the mountain's volcanic rock, this house was originally created for Omar Sharif. The actor is said to have lost it in a game of cards, whilst filming there in the 1970s. The property offers breathtaking views of the valley and is an enchanting maze of caves, tunnels and secret passages. The restaurant features lakeside terraces while two gorgeous guesthouses, with swimming pool and tennis courts, are available for rent. Lagomar is a truly unique place that will take your breath away.
For even greater escapism, a visit to La Graciosa is a must. It's like being transported to your own desert island. Separated from the mainland by the strait of El Rio, La Graciosa is reached by taking a ferry from Lanzarote's northernmost point, Orzola. The island is a nature reserve. It has no roads and a population of only 600 people. Construction work is completely banned, apart from in the single village on the island, so it is beautifully unspoilt. Take a trek through the rugged terrain, explore the coastline and gorgeous beaches or find out why Lanzarote is the largest protected marine reserve in Europe by going out to sea in a glass-bottomed boat. Finish of your adventures by eating like a local and enjoy the amazing fresh fish served in the restaurants on the harbour.
