This year the Islanders of Lanzarote are attempting to take their Christmas celebrations to record breaking lengths. The annual Father Christmas Parade, held on the 23rd of December, in Puerto Del Carmen is a tradition long observed and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The main attraction, Santa himself, is led down the promenade aboard his magically decorated, horse drawn sleigh, from 18.00-20.00, and throws gifts and sweets to all the children that come to join the parade. But children are not the only ones expected join in: this year, everyone has is asked to don a Santa suit and aid the Islanders in their attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most Father Christmas' holding hands. Shops all along the waterfront are set to sell costumes for reduced rates, so there is no excuse not to join in.
Lanzarote's various Christmas markets provide entertaining shopping and unique yuletide gifts. The 'Le Recova' Market, Arrecife, is one of the most charming on the Island. This whitewashed, cobbled marketplace had been closed for two decades until recently, but is now thriving. Open 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) from 09.00-14.00, 'Le Recova' sells crafts such as pottery, handmade shoes, jewelry and delicious cakes, all made by local artisans.
The Friday evening 'Mercado Artesanal', Playa Blanca, is also a delightful place to do your festive shopping. This nighttime craft fair is beautifully atmospheric, held in a model traditional Spanish 'pueblo', the lit up walkways are lined with colorful stalls selling clothing, exotic fabrics and souvenirs to suit a range of budgets.
The Sunday 'Haria' Market is a larger affair. Nestled in the Haria Valley, the multitude of green palms surrounding it retain their colour throughout the winter months lending the market, and it's 30 stalls, a tropical vibe even at Christmas. This market is known especially for traditional, local food, including preserves such as honey and jam, as well as being a great place to view and purchase local artwork.
Flights to Lanzarote land at ACE (Aeropuerto De Lanzarote), which is well served with frequent flights to the UK and Northern Europe. Taxis and Buses provide a good value service when travelling around the island: however, to explore more remote areas of natural beauty car hire is recommended.
