Fiesta in Tao, Lanzarote

lanzarote water sports

Instead of spending another raining weekend talking about how depressingly-soon Christmas is, why not transport yourself to some sun, beach and a fantastic little Spanish festival. On Sunday 13th November, the picturesque little village of Tao, in the centre of Lanzarote, hosts its annual fiesta. And flights to Lanzarote will have you enjoying its mid-20s weather in only four hours.

Part of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is steeped in religion and as such there is a plethora of celebrations all year round, to honour the various patron saints associated with each area. As one of the region's least touristy areas, Tao's is just that little bit more special. Expect modern and traditional music and dancing, wonderful costumes, mouth-watering food and a warm Spanish welcome. And once in Lanzarote, you'll be spoilt for beaches. To the south of the island is the resort of Playa Blanca, home to the beaches of Papagayo which, some say, are the most beautiful that the island has to offer. Hugely popular with all sun worshippers, it's particularly the place to go if you like nudist sunbathing.

If water activities, like snorkelling, jet skis or diving lessons, are more your thing, then try the beaches along Puerto Del Carmen. For something a little bit different, check out Playa Quemada. A favourite with locals, this remote volcanic island with its string of hidden coves is worth visiting if only to see its black sand, which contrasts spectacularly with the crystal clear water. The most exciting way to get to Playa Quemada is by boat from Puerto Calero. And I'd recommend packing a bag for the whole day, so that on the way home you can stop at Puerto Calero's best restaurant, the Amura. Everything on the menu is scrumptious. But the chef's special, five-course taster menu is to die for. Enjoy it on Saturday and then dance it off at the fiesta in Tao on Sunday.
