kOS

If you are looking for a peaceful destination for your next holiday, then Kos is really not your place. It is a hot spot for people coming from all over the world, to enjoy the sun and sand. The peak holiday season is quite exciting and full of activity, making Kos a great place to visit with family.

Apart from a great holiday destination, this Greek island is more famous due to the fact that it was home of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Fittingly so, the island started an International Health Film Festival in the year 2009 in order to felicitate the efforts of filmmakers dedicated towards showcasing health issues through films. This one of its kind festival is held in the month of September.

Every year the event is organized by the Kos Cultural Organization along with Lucia Rikaki, who is the brain behind the event. The organization invites both artists and audience from all over the world to watch, discuss and recognize the audiovisual works on different health issues. Only productions that have been created in the last two years are screened during the festival.

The films screened basically focus on different aspects of health including, prevention, cure and humanitarian issues related to different health conditions. The organization also gives away awards for feature and medium length films as well as short films. These are judged by a panel of three international juries consisting of doctors, scientists and film directors. The awards include the Golden, Silver and Bronze Hippocrates, given to a filmmaker.

All the films are screened at the Open Cinema Orpheus and Municipal Cinema in the main town of Kos. The event is held for 5 days and is worth a visit simply because its a unique idea. The festival was started with an aim of promoting tourism and focuses on developing cultural life in Kos and surrounding areas.

There are several flights to Kos Greece, however, the airport is located a good 22 km away from the main town. This is not really a cause for worry as you would find a number of taxis and buses to take you to your place of stay. The island is well connected with Athens all through the year.
