Kypria Festival on Cyprus

September saw the promotion of the Kypria Festival, with events in all the major towns of Cyprus during the month.
The island of Cyprus presents a wealth of music concerts and festivals throughout the whole year. From choir and jazz festivals in Paphos, Larnaca's Classical Music Festival, the Berengaria International Music Festival in Limassol and of course the dance music events in the famous nightclubs of Ayia Napa in the east of the island.
This year's Kypria International Festival, supported by the island's Ministry of Education and Cultural Services features 11 different music, dance and theatrical performances. It claims to be the leading cultural event on the island, which is a big claim given the hundreds of other promotions that take place here each year. The first performance was given on 1st September by the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra in Larnaca. The festival's programme includes theatrical performances of Don Quixote in Strovolos and Larnaca, two concerts by Portuguese singer Dulce Pontes in Nicosia and Paphos and contemporary dance performances under the guidance of Cypriot choreographer Lia Heraki in Larnaca, Limassol and Strovolos on 4th October.
Two more of the festival's closing performances are concerts by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra accompanied by soprano Katerina Mina in their interpretation of the one-act opera Human Voice.
The dance music season, popular in Ayia Napa, also comes to a conclusion during October with one of the final sessions being a visit to the island by top DJ Paul Van Dyk on 3rd October. As part of his 2009 World tour, Van Dyk will perform at the Spyros Kyprianou stadium in Limassol. Tickets for the concert by the German DJ, frequently voted as one of the world's best, cost between 25 and 40 euros in advance.
