Santorini is a scenic island dotted with several structures in white and blue.Built on the remains of volcanic eruptions, it is one of the most popular destinations in Greece. Apart from the beaches and places of historical interest, the island is also known for various cultural events and festivals held throughout the year.
Megaro Gyzi is the cultural center of Santorini and organizes different events, especially during the peak tourist season. The events include concerts, traditional dances, painting and photographic exhibitions and even lectures on different aspects of Greek culture. They are all organized on large scale and are quite an attraction for local residents as well as foreign visitors.
The festival of cultural events is something you must attend if you plan your visit anytime in August. The festival is held every year from 1st August to the 31st August and consists of a plethora of events including painting exhibitions, musical concerts and theatrical performances by renowned artists. Well, the whole event is free to attend, a very good reason for you to go and check it out.
The idea behind the cultural events is to promote the tradition and preserve the cultural heritage of the island. Thus, the Megaro Gyzi centre has kept it away from commercialization to a large extent, holding the events with an aim of generating interest in both young and old.
Apart from these events you can also see the museum which has six permanent exhibitions. These include some very interesting displays such as authentic engravings having dresses, maps and landscapes of the Cycladic islands starting from the 15th century till the 19th century. It also has an exhibition of old theraic historical manuscripts, both private and public along with a collection of paintings by famous Greek artists.
The shop at the museum offers different publications by the Megaro Gyzi centre, including photographic albums and books. The shop also offers a limited edition colored lithograph made by Miltos Pantelias, a famous Greek artist. Though the center itself is against commercialization, the shop is aimed at promoting art and culture of Santorini.
