Palma de Mallorca: a paradise for holidaymakers

palma de mallorca beach

The capital city and main port of Majorca in the Balearic Islands, Palma is a paradise for holidaymakers seeking sun, sea and sand (and possibly sangria). In the heart of the Mediterranean, the island has a climate that favours holidays at any time of the year - the temperature stays pleasantly in the high twenties during the summer and remains mild even in winter. Add to this the many great attractions to be found in the city and the surrounding area, and it's no wonder there are millions of people boarding flights to Palma each year.

Almost half of Majorca's population lives in Palma, and it provides a great base for anyone who wants to explore the island. But even if you're looking for enticing beaches, exciting nightlife and restaurants serving exquisite Spanish cuisine, there's really no need to leave the capital at all.

Attractions for the whole family

There many family-friendly attractions to enjoy in the city. Palma Aquarium offers a fun and educational up-close look at thousands of sea creatures from 700 species around the world. Palma's gothic cathedral and the Castell de Bellver - a 14th Century castle that overlooks the city - also offer some welcome detours from the beach.

For a whistle-stop sightseeing tour of Palma, you can watch the world go by from an open-top double decker bus, or even take a scenic railway journey though beautiful scenery and mountains to the tranquil town of Soller.

If the kids need entertaining, Aqualand El Arenal, a short bus ride from Palma, has many exciting water slides, rides and swimming pools. Back in the city there's some great shopping to be had for retail therapy addicts.

Adventure and excitement...

All manner of excursions leave Palma on a daily basis, giving you the chance to explore natural caves, go hiking, climbing or cycling in the countryside, or even go on a balloon ride and see a different side of Majorca from the air. Golf lovers will be pleased to know that there's an abundance of courses to be found in Palma and the surrounding area.

Scuba diving and a range of other water sports also await those who would rather be splashing around in the sea than traipsing around on land. Come evening time, if you want to party hard, grab a bus or taxi over to Magaluf for some mindblowing nightlife.

Whether you're looking for a romantic break, a family holiday, or to enjoy the beach and nightlife with friends, Palma is your gateway to Majorca.
