Being strategically located, Preveza changed several hands before joining Greece as a state. Your flights to preveza greece will actually land you at the Aktio airport, which is situated across the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf. Different historical structures and the atmosphere of the town itself narrate its history, which was ridden by war and occupation by Venice, France and Turkey. Today, the town invites everybody, from holiday goers to history enthusiasts, to explore its rich past and enjoy its natural beauty.
During the festivals, the town looks as if frozen in time. Traditional costumes accompanied with dance and music truly takes you back in time. The Womens Carnival is one such event to look forward to if you happen to be here around Ash Monday. The carnival was started sometime in the 1960s, when women from all over the town decided to dress up in colorful costumes and parade the city. Something that started just as a fun event has become one of the most important events for women in Preveza.
Womens carnival is considered a significant event by the Municipality of Preveza, which now organizes the event. The carnival is held every year on the last Thursday before Ash Monday, where more than 1,000 women participate from Preveza as well as surrounding areas. Each participant chooses a theme for the costume to be worn, however, at times a group of women choose a single theme and plan to dress accordingly. The themes may range from flowers and animals to professions and even objects.
The carnival is now held at a larger scale than in the past, with number of women increasing every year. However, the event is still restricted to women. The entire event is quite a spectacle to watch as several women parade the streets in traditional dresses, laughing and simply enjoying themselves. Music and dance adds to all the fun, both for the women and visitors watching the event. The parade begins at the Secondary Primary School on the Irinis Avenue, which is the main road of the town. It crosses the Karyotaki Street and the sea front, ending at the Androutsos square.
In the evening all the women gather at the entertainment center of the town where they are joined by their husbands to celebrate the end of the carnival. Even if you are not really part of the carnival it still makes quite a piece of entertainment and a good reason to get out and have some fun.
