Rhodes welcomes Blind Athletes

The ancient Greek's love of sport goes back many thousands of years and the stadium, that forms part of the Acropolis of Rhodes, is a breathtaking structure that allows visitors to imagine what times were like. The stadium was unearthed after a large excavation and most of the original 600 feet of straight are still preserved together with lower levels of seating and the rounded sphendone at one end.
Greece hosted another sporting event when the International Blind Sports Federation's European championships in athletics took place on the island of Rhodes. The Kallipatera athletics stadium was the centre of the event activities that ran for 10 days until June 14th 2009. Competitions were held in 14 paralympic disciplines and included many of the medal winners from last year's Beijing Olympics.
The authorities on Rhodes worked very hard to help stage a successful games and enjoyed a spectacular opening ceremony. The area around Rhodes was chosen due to its outstanding services and sports facilities. The organisers expected over 500 competitors from 35 European countries to attend the games. The current stadium in Rhodes is a new structure and was completed in 2007 when it hosted the Rhodes Island Games. This special occasion brought together sports people from 25 island groups all over the world and in 2007 over 3500 athletes came to Rhodes to participate in the games that take place every two years.
Rhodes boasts fantastic facilities for many other sports such as tennis, cycling, windsurfing, sailing and swimming, and attracts people to the island all year round due to its mild climatic conditions.
