The Algarve is famous for its excellent seafood cuisine. This remarkable attraction can be tied to the long stretches of seashore and harbours dotting the whole region, which contribute to the richness and beauty of Algarve. The area shows off its qualities during the Sardine festival in Faro. Every year, there is an influx of visitors and flights to Faro because of this summer festival, which takes place in the month of August on the Riverside zone in Portimao. Thousands of sardine enthusiasts return to Faro during this event to participate in the fun and challenging competitions which this festival offers.
As the name suggests, Sardine festival gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy excellent sardines and other types of fish. During the festival, you will find a lot of restaurants, under the erected halls with about 2200 sitting capacity, displaying their various tasty specialties. These sardines or fish, fresh from surrounding waters, are prepared on a special giant grill of about 42 yards long. Depending on your choice, you could have yours barbequed, crispy or charcoal-grilled and seasoned with salt or without. These delicacies are best eaten with bread or boiled potatoes, a green pepper or tomato salad and a glass of good wine or beer.
You don't have to love sardines or fish to be a part of this festival. Besides the sardines, there are other snacks such as meat, cheese or smoked sausages, cakes, ice creams and other ocean or regional treats which you can enjoy. However, it's not recommended for vegetarians to enter the festival grounds with an empty stomach, because they will be surely be tempted to abandon their faith. The festival also features interesting activities and entertainments like games, fireworks and live music. From 06/08/2010 until 15/08/2010, there will be performances by different bands every night.
