Tenerife Gomera Rock festival

The smaller island of Gomera, off the coast of Tenerife hosted its first Gomera Rock festival in August this year.

Most of the music events in the Canaries are centred on the larger islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote or Gran Canaria, but in August the smaller island of La Gomera took its turn. Gomera Rock is the first incarnation of this event and took place in San Sebastian at the del Lamero stadium on Friday 29th August starting at 10pm.

The three bands that performed are all local groups. A young group called Ton who took to the stage first to play their music which they say is similar in style to Motorhead or Judas Priest - it is likely to be fairly loud. Then next up were Oi Se Arma who are a popular local punk band that were formed in 2005 and have gone through various line ups during their development. Finally on stage were Hybris, a heavy metal band that hail from San Cristobal de La Laguna on Tenerife and already have many fans in the Canaries.

Anyone on Tenerife who wanted to go to the festival had the option of taking a ferry from Los Christianos to San Sebastian, which takes about 1 hour and costs approximately 30 Euros for the return trip.

Other events on La Gomera during August included various island fiestas with the Fiesta de la Candelaria being a large celebration which took place on 15th August. A procession through the streets is followed by dancing, eating and drinking into the early hours.
