The slowing down of the holiday season and the quieter roads are exactly what motorsports fans on Tenerife have been waiting for.
The island of Tenerife is popular holiday destination all year round now, with mild winter weather proving attractive to those seeking to get away from the harsher winters in northern Europe. But the busiest periods are always during the summer months, so when things start to calm down during Autumn, various events that would have proved impossible during the peak season can now take place.
The Villa Adeje Motor Rally, first held in 1981, is a short, two day road rally that took place on the evening of 11th September and continued during the day of 12th September. Before the rally cars arrived at the start line, they were assembled at the Sport Pavillion in Adeje, where drivers, service crews and supporters could mingle and look forward to the four special stages that lay ahead. A special service area had been arranged in the car park of the local Tropicana Club, close to the Costa Adeje Golf Club, where running repairs and tuning adjustments could be made.
The road stages are all on tarmac surfaces and suitable for some the fastest rally cars currently in use. In recent years the winners have primarily been those using cars of WRC (World rally Championship) class. The first stage was at Cuevo del Polvo and started at la Caldera in Santiago del Teide. Two stages started in Arono, the first taking a route to San Miguel and the second a route to La Escalona. The fourth stage took place on roads between La Concepcion and Taucho. The sight of these cars racing on Tenerife's narrow and twisting is certainly a spectacle, and due to the Spaniard's love of motorsport, big crowds were expected at all the locations.
