The baroque 16th century Church of Conception is the city's oldest house of worship, and its statuesque bell-tower is a easily identifiable landmark. Look inside for typical Canarian architecture such as teak balconies and hand carved woodwork. On display at the altar is the Holy Cross of the Conquest, while the stained glass windows reflect the bright Spanish sunshine making the whole interior feel heavenly.
Another top cultural on Tenerife spot is The Museum of Nature and Man (Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre). This collection includes some of the best examples of objects from pre-Hispanic Canary Islands history.
An amble around Santa Cruz should include the Church of San Francisco, a former monastery with one of the city's most appealing squares, the Plaza Principe Asturias. From there, you could easily venture down the Pedro Alcantara to soon arrive at Calle de Castillo, one of the main shopping streets. Not far from the Calle de Castillo is the Parliament building on Calle Teobaldo Power, celebrated for its architectural diversity.
At the very centre of the island is the highest point on Spanish territory, the 3,718m Mount Teide. This was a once-active volcano (though now dormant)which last erupted in 1909. The volcano and its large surroundings comprise Teide National Park. The park was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. To arrive at the summit there is a steep but exhilarating eight-minute cable-car ride which provides spectacular views of the valley and many rock formations in the surrounding area.
