While most travellers book their flights to Preveza because of the beautiful sun drenched beaches, this destination hosts some unique and lively festivals during the summer months, including the Sardine and Choral festival. The most greatly anticipated of these events is the Nikopolia Festival, which takes place from late June to early September. Covering all art forms, the festival has been running for over 45 years, and is a cherished favourite of the locals.

Nestled in between the cobbled, pedestrian only streets, the festival plays host to a plethora of musical, theatrical and artistic talent from all over the world. The repertoire moves from re-enactments of Greek tragedies (both ancient and modern), to devised pieces by the regional theatre companies who battle it out to gain local recognition and praise. Make sure you don't miss seeing one of the traditional puppet shows that take place on Platia Androutsou by the port in the north of the town. This is the only traditional Greek puppet show in the country and its intricate detail and wonderful story tales will leave you spellbound.

From a musical point of view, the festival has it all. Whether you like rock, jazz, Greek, contemporary or classical, this festival caters for all tastes and styles. At night, the alleys in the bazaar, especially around the fish-market building and the clock tower, come to life with bars, uzeris and cafes crammed with locals and people from nearby resorts.

The town itself is charming. Boasting a hip and cosmopolitan feel due to its mix of students and artists, the town retains a bohemian atmosphere where you can play a leisurely game of tavli with the locals, or sip a glass of delicious local wine while dining on the islands speciality, grilled sardines. The harbour side provides a perfect backdrop for you to watch the world go by.

If you are feeling adventurous, take a day trip to the springs at the River Aherontas. The sight of the river and canyon is beautiful and highly recommended. The ancient cities of Athens and Thessanolinki can also be reached by bus from Preveza.
