Banjul, Gambia's little city with big possibilities. Banjul is the capital city of Gambia and is located inside the state bearing the same name. It is one of the smallest African capitals, home of less than 50,000 people. Many take flights to Banjul Gambia to enjoy the cultural delights.
Although the province is called the same, this small city is located in the St. Mary Island, where the Gambia Rivers meets with the Atlantic Ocean. The island is connected to the rest of the continent by passenger/vehicle ferry and many bridges to the south.
This city was founded in the early 19th century, and it became the capital city of Gambia in 1965 when this country gained its independence from Great Britain. One of the most waited events is the Banjul Challenge. It is a very unique and special car racing event that begins in the UK and finishes in this African city. It is special because only old and cheap cars are allowed, and the driver teams are required to patch their vehicles all through the route, in the three weeks that the race lasts.
This major event attracts people from many nations and each year, more people sign up to join into this wild and fun car race. The race begins in December/January each year and it is easy to attend this event, since there are flights to the International Banjul airport on a regular basis.
Once in the city, there are many interesting landmarks to visit: the National Museum in Gloucester Street that teach about the colonial times of this country, or the Banjul Museum, with an interesting exposition about the Juju Magic. This wonderful land has a lot to show. The people are friendly and they welcome visitors with a wide smile and a very friendly attitude.
