There are many reasons for travelling light: it's easier, cheaper and better for the environment than bringing excess luggage on the plane. When you book a flight, you are allowed to bring one piece of hand baggage no bigger than 43cm x 28cm x 23 cm and 5kg in weight per person, mobility equipment and children's pushchairs. When you book short haul flights such as flights to Funchal, it is possible to add hold baggage allowance of 20kg online via "Your booking" page from 12 pounds per person per flight for or with the call centre from 17 pounds per person per flight. But before you do so, ask yourself: do you really need it? Here are some tips for travelling light with toddlers.
1. Only bring their favourite toys. You don't need to pack tons of toys to keep your kids entertained. Since you're going somewhere new, everything will become interesting. The airport is a great place for a scavenger hunt and a couple of crayons and a piece of paper will keep your kids happy on the plane.
2. Don't bring nappies for the entire vacation, just for the first day. Nappies take up a lot of space so it's very expensive to ship them and you can almost certainly buy them at the local supermarket.
3. Pack simple, basic clothing that doesn't stain or wrinkle too easily and wear comfortable shoes. Don't overdo it, you can always buy a small packet of washing powder or an extra pair of flip flops if you need them.
4. When it comes to toiletries, make sure you bring essentials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and plasters. Remember that you're not allowed to bring big bottles of sunscreen, hairspray, shower gel or shampoo in your hand luggage. You might as well buy them when you get to your destination.
5. If you or your loved ones need medicines such as asthma inhalers or contraceptive pills, it's recommended to pack extra supplies of these in case you have to deal with unexpected delays. Don't remove syringes or medicines from the original packaging with printed labels and manufacturer's information, and bring a letter from your GP who prescribed the drug.
6. Call the hotel beforehand and ask if they have pool or beach towels - many do. If you have to bring your own towels, bring micro-fibre travel towels.
