Why you should spend a few days in Palma de Mallorca

mallorca

A city of spectacular spires, beautiful architecture and a real cosmopolitan feel, Palma de Mallorca still manages to maintain that unique 'island' identity. Despite being the only true city on the island, Palma is a thriving juxtaposition between the best that city life has to offer and a fabulous mix of Spanish and Moorish influenced buildings that give it a truly 'old world' feel.

Palma is an ideal location for a city break with a difference. The airport is only nine kilometres from the city centre, and plentiful flights to Palma from most UK destinations make it an attractive alternative to Paris or Rome for a long weekend break. Situated on the north western end of a bay in the south west of the island, Palma is an ideal stopping off point for cruises to the other Balearic islands and a popular destination for the yachts of the super-rich.

City and Beach holidays

Thanks to its unique position, Palma not only offers visitors the perfect city break destination, but families looking for a beach holiday also have access to Cala Major, Can Pere Antoni and the white sands of Ciudad Jardin - a beautifully sheltered spot with excellent amenities. To keep the kids really happy, there's also the excellent Aqualand water park, a hugely popular destination packed with excitement and activities for water lovers of all ages.

For history buffs, Palma's variety and its complex past have produced a city that's full of unique discoveries and stunning locations. The spectacular Catedral de Mallorca dominates the centre of the city, while the stunning Castell de Bellver is a 14th Century castle and is one of the most distinctive Spanish castles. Built on the ruins of a Muslim site and known for its unique circular design, it provides visitors with the best view of the bay of Palma and the entire city below.

A city of Festivals

For clubbers, Palma is filled with buzzing bars, uber-chic clubs and restaurants offering an international menu peppered with local specialities. Palma is also very much a festival city, with the annual music Festival Isladencanta in July, the Festival de Pollenca in August showcasing the best in classical music and the Fonart Short Film Festival during August and September.

Although most people landing in Mallorca make a beeline for the resorts around the island, the city of Palma is a delightful, year-round destination for those looking for a little bit more than the usual beach holiday, and as such is well worth a visit.
