A Far Cry From Fuerteventura

If we are talking about the January weather in the UK too much, it's because it seems to be the only talking point around at the moment but also because it provides a stark contrast to the conditions in many of our winter sun destinations.
In January in Caleta de Fusta on the island of Fuerteventura you would have been able to see a procession of camels walking through the streets as the locals celebrated the annual Epiphany festival of the Three Kings. Marching bands led the way and four camels with riders in traditional costume followed behind. We're not sure who was riding the fourth camel, but the costume looked distinctly red and white and there may have been a white beard in evidence.
Caleta is one of the newer resorts on Fuerteventura and has been able to control building development very well, allowing it to retain an authentic Canarian feel. Weather conditions have been kind to the tourists who came to the island to spend New Year in the sun and the beach was packed with sunbathers and swimmers given some of the photographs we have seen. The beach in Caleta is very large with plenty of space for everyone, even during the busiest days of summer and especially during the winter months of January and February when the daytime temperatures can average around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, that's 23 degrees Celsius.
Caleta de Fusta is a resort on the east coast of the island and lies approximately 8 miles south of the island's capital Puerto del Rosario. Midway between the two towns is the island's airport at El Mattoral. The airport was built in the 1960's, provides modern facilities and handles around 4.5 million passengers each year.
Flythomascook.com provide flights to Fuerteventura from 11 UK airports during the winter, adding a further airport, Luton, for the spring and summer.
