Akrotiri is one of the remotest villages in Santoirini and as you reach the village by bus you will come across a lot of twists and turns of the road. The village is located around 12 km away from Fira. It is more towards the south-western part of the island. The village of Akrotiri has the underpinnings of the volcanic eruption that is still evident around the village as it had been buried under the destruction for long. Santorini can be reached by air in 40 minutes from Athens and you can plan your vacation accordingly. There are flights to Santorini from other parts of Greece too.

As you enter the Akrotiri you will be welcomed warmly by the neatly whitewashed buildings that have a unique sense of brightness to it. You might also bump into some grapevines at some of the corners of the village. Thats the reason why some of the wineries have survived here.

The excavations in Akrotiri have revealed the fortress called Acropolis, which was a highly fortified Venetian fortress of the medieval time. The castle of Acropolius was torn down after the Turks had occupied Santorini. When you visit the village you will be able to see the remains of the fortress. You can visit the old churches here, named Ipapandi tou Sotiros and Aghia Triada.

If you want to take a look at the Caldera you can do so while touring through the approach road of Akrotiri. Towards the right side you will definitely be able to view the Caldera. The neighboring villages named Oia and Fira are also visible from this height. There are some taverns and hotels around the area that can be chosen for your stay in Akrotiri.

In order to safeguard the remains of Akrotiri it has been covered using a huge roof. The site was closed for some years so that the roof and the entire site could be refurbished for the sake of the tourists. The site generally remains open from 8.30 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon.

The place where you see the huge roof is amazingly quiet. The walls are brown in color and cover just half of your height. The bright frescoes that were collected have been shifted to the National Archaeological Museum at Athens. Some of the artifacts, such as figurines and jars were also found in the ruins of the site which have been secured in the Archaeological Museum in Thira.
