Alcudia Fair in October

Alcudia on the island Majorca in spain

During the summer months the resort of Alcudia on the northern coast of Mallorca transforms into a buzzing beach location, fringed with a huge selection of luxury hotels, bars, restaurants, cafes and one of the best sandy beaches on the island. Once the peak months of the summer are gone, everything starts to move at a slightly slower pace, although the resort doesn't quite return to the peaceful, quiet rural zone it once was before tourism discovered it.

The harbour area of Alcudia, which sits at the start of 6 miles of golden beach, is a cosmopolitan area that mixes the wealth and luxury of the large yachts on the moorings with a pleasant pedestrian waterfront space. It is the perfect place for a festival and the Alcudia Fair, which took place on the first weekend of October this year, is just one of the events that makes use of the location. Visitors to Mallorca are often attracted to the more famous resorts closer to Palma, but the beaches in this part of the island really are something special. There are very few places in Europe with a golden sandy beach as long as the one in Alcudia.

The festival itself was a combination of music concerts, local food tastings, art and craft displays and processions. This is a celebration put on by local people for themselves so you could expect to see more of the traditional Mallorcan culture than you would at some of the summer events. It was a 3 day event that also included a produce market and horse riding displays, something more normally found on the neighbouring island of Menorca. One of the highlights of the Fira d'Alcudia was the S'Estol del Rei en Jaume. This part of the fair took place on the Saturday evening and was a display of huge figures representing famous characters from Mallorcan history. The figures are built with oversized heads and are said to be on display only at this particular festival.

The Alcudia Fair was a three day event which took place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th October 2009.
