Whatever your preferred hobby or pastime, a stay on the Algarve during April is likely to provide something to tempt you to leave the beaches and explore this fascinating region.

For food lovers, the Festival of Gastronomy is held for the 7th time this year in Tavira. Being by the ocean, you can imagine sea food playing a large part in this popular festival. In fact, the town of Tavira has long been an important fishing port on the Algarve. Its popular Sardine festival later in the year is world famous. Tavira's Festival of Gastronomy of the Sea runs between 22nd April and 9th May.

2010 is an important year for Portugal as it is celebrating 100 years as a republic and the Century games are a series of sporting events forming part of the occasion. On 25th April the authorities in Loule will be marking the occasion by organising a 100km Mountain Bike race. The ALTE Mountain-Biking Competition is not a challenge for the casual rider but, for experienced riders, the 12th running of this race is an interesting challenge.

On the water, jetskiers get their chance to showcase their skills during the 3rd International Jetski and Water Motorbike Endurance Race which takes places in the Rio Arade and the waters offshore from Portimao between the 16th and 18th April.

Visitors to Faro who are also fans of the performing arts enjoyed a two day international dance competition which took place in the city on the 9th and 10th of April. Admission for visitors was free with the main gala performances at the Figuras Theatre on 10th April at 9:30pm.
