In the Portuguese holiday region of the Algarve, the start of the main holiday season is also joined by the first of several international motorsport events that will take place on a recently built circuit just outside the city of Portimao.
The motor racing circuit at Portimao has only been open since October 2008, yet has already been the venue for some of the world's top level motor racing events, including rounds of the World Superbike Championship and the FIA GT Championship. The circuit is also used by Formula One teams for their testing sessions. One day it is hoped that the venue will even host a round of the Formula One Championship as the Portuguese Grand Prix. During 2010, the venue will, for the first time, stage a round of the World Touring Car Championship.
This year's World Superbike Championship started at the end of February when British rider Leon Haslam won the first round in Australia and Portimao was the venue for the most recent round of the series on March 28th. It was made sure that tickets for the event were still available right up to the event itself for either the whole weekend or just the Sunday race. Prices started from 24 Euros.
Some of the other events being staged at the circuit this year include the World Touring Car Championship on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th July, and the FIA-GT World Championship between the 17th and 19th September.
Portimao is easy to travel to, with flythomascook.com providing a choice of flights to Faro, the nearest airport to the circuit, just less than an hour away.
