If you are visiting one of the resorts on the Algarve this summer, then in addition to the usual cultural events, an array of sporting competitions is planned for both spectators and amateur participants. Resorts like Faro, Portimao, Vilamoura and Tavira are all close to the sporting events for 2010.

Motorsport events are held regularly at the new world class facility near Portimao and numerous golf tournaments for professionals and amateurs take place at the various international standard courses along the Algarve. For 2010, these include the Solverde Algarve Open Golf Tournament during May and the 10th ACCA Pro-Am Ladies' Golf Tournament at the Vale do Lobo course in June.

On the water, all kinds of sailing and powerboat events are held throughout the summer. During May, the World Powerboat Championships are held at Vila Real de Santo Antonio, while a regional surfing competition is held on Quarteira beach. Last June, Portimao welcomed back the yachts of the round-the-world Global Ocean Race. Portimao has a great tradition in sailing and all kinds of events take place throughout the summer. Sadly, the impressive yachts of a round-the-world fleet will be absent this year, although the town is hoping to host the start of the next race in 2011.

At the end of June, the Kite Masters-Portimao World Tour takes place when some of the world's best kitesurfers come to Portugal to showcase their skills. Other sports with competitions to be enjoyed on the Algarve this summer include swimming, horse riding, bowls, cycling, archery, windsurfing, karting, beach volleyball, beach football, jet skiing and water polo.
