Algarve Sports Fest during August

Boats at Algarve Bay

From Faro to Lagos, the Algarve just doesn't seem to slow down in August. All along this holiday coastline, there are sporting events every week to keep competitors and spectators alike happy. If you want to be part of this, it's wise to book your flights to Faro now. The warm weather doesn't put people off either with everything from athletic races to high profile motorsport events on the calendar.

The Algarve seems to have a particular association with sporting events both of the professional standard and of mass participation. The recently built Algarve International Motor Park, an international motor racing circuit has hosted many top class events this year and Portimao is also a centre for sailing enthusiasts. The beaches along the coast provide all kinds of conditions suited to windsurfers, kitesurfers and other water sports enthusiasts. Not to mention the many venues for sports like golf, windsurfing, triathlon, powerboating, athletics, swimming, beach football and waterpolo.

During August the sporting competitions on the Algarve continue with a variety of events for both spectators and those who want to join in. These included a the most popular location for the ATP Champions tennis tour at Vale do Lobo, taking place from 10-13th August and the Super Bock Surf Fest at Praia do Tonel which combines surfing with 10 musical acts.

Two of the more unusual events during August are the annual Bathing Festival at Lagos which runs for the 30th time this year from late August and features entertainment and night swimming activities. Also, around the same time is the Noite Branca or White Night, where people in the city of Loule all dress in white and come into the town centre for street entertainment, concerts and other celebrations.
