Alive After Five in Sandford

Visitors to Florida this summer may be interested in sampling Sandford's regular "Alive after Five" event, which is held each month on the second Thursday.

Alive after Five is a monthly street party organised by the town of Sandford, Florida during the summer months. The theme for the August event, to be held on 13th August, is "Tropical Nights". Thousands of people come to the regular event, which this year is also held in May, June and July. There are stalls serving food and drink together with live music and other performances.

This is claimed to be the biggest monthly street party in central Florida and for a small admission charge of seven dollars, visitors get three hours of evening enjoyment. Festivities are based around the Historic Sandford Welcome Center, and in August two live bands are featured. At the Riverside Pottery Courtyard, The Bluehemians will perform, while Bahamian Junkaroo Band will bring cultural music and dance of the type seen at the traditional festival of the same name that takes place in many towns and villages in the Bahamas. Steel drum music and brightly coloured costumed dancers are features of the spectacle that can be seen on First Street. The Junkaroo tradition started on the islands in the 1960's and there are now over 70 bands dedicated to the festival style.
