Along the Coast from Marmaris

Sailing boat

The Turkish resort of Marmaris has used its special location on the coast to become a central hub of tourism, but just along the coast there are many more secrets to uncover.

The spectacular bay of Marmaris is a unique place on the coast of Southern Turkey and can easily be reached by short transfers from either Bodrum or Dalaman airports. However venture further west from the town, which over the last 30 years has developed beyond all recognition on the back of its popularity as a holiday resort, and you’ll quickly stumble across the Turkey of old.

Given the scale of development in Marmaris itself, it is perhaps surprising that similar changes have not taken place in other towns along the coast. The full benefits of tourism are yet to reach these areas so anyone looking for a wide selection of luxury hotels and fine restaurants may have to wait a few years but for unspoilt charm and place to get away from the hustle and bustle the area cannot be beaten.

Previously just a tiny fishing village and a destination for daily boat trips from Marmaris, Turunc now has its own selection of holiday accommodation to attract visitors into a longer stay. There is still a choice of simple and welcoming local establishments but investment is now providing attractive villas and hotels on the outskirts of the village. From Turunc Marmaris can be reached by taxi, either by road or water in around 30 minutes.

For those who want to get even further off the beaten track the Bozburun Peninsula has a plethora of isolated bays and inlets combined with attractive inland forest areas. The village of Bozburun itself it slowly transitioning its boat building heritage from fishing vessels to luxury yachts and motor cruisers and the new marina provides a modern amenity to help attract sailors to the area.
