Skiathos is a great place in Greece which has good beach resorts and many tourist facilities if you want to see more known places of Skiathos. Skiathos is reachable by air and there are a number of flights to Skiathos from major airports all over the world. Alonissos is a beautiful place to visit if you are here for some relaxation. It has been occupied from the prehistoric times. This is quite evident from the excavations that were carried out at site of the acropolis wall belonging to the Classical period. It is said to have been from the ancient city of Ikos that today can be seen in form of Kokkinokastro.

Alonissos is a rather less populated city consisting of just about 1200 residents and it is definitely peaceful compared to any busy city of Europe. In fact, if you really want to enjoy some tranquil and quaint location then it will be a pleasure to visit this beautifully serene city. The area is surrounded by undulating hills which rise up suddenly from the sea on this exquisite Northern Sporades Island.

The coast here is rugged and since it is slightly away from the mainland it makes for a peaceful tourist destination. As a result, Alonissos is known to be the most idyllic and unspoiled island along the Aegean Sea. Several boats leave every day from Skiathos to Alonissos and other smaller islets around Alonissos. In case, you are short of time then a boat trip is the best way of getting a quick tour of the region. If you have ample amount of time, you must stay for several days here at Alonissos to really unwind yourself.

1992 was the year when the Mediterranean monk seal was recognized as one of the many endangered species. This was when a Marine Park was founded here in Alonissos spanning the entire Northern Sporades. This was the first initiative taken to preserve the natural habitat of monk seals. The state took tremendous amount of interest in monitoring the parks marine environment and for caring and rescuing the injured seals from all over Greece.

Alonissos even consists of a centre for reintegration and giving a refuge to these rescued seals. Here they are received and treated actively for injuries. Then they are taken back to their natural environment. The centre looks after close to 50 seals that are living freely at the marine park. Alonissos and the marine park are worth a visit at least once.
