An open-air summer fiesta in Alicante

Alicante Sunset

When it comes to celebrations, the Spanish don’t do things by halves. On the 5th of August, Alicante will be hosting the Virgen del Remedio festival, a cultural festival in honour of the matron saint. Among the floods of summer celebrations in Alicante, this festival manages to stand out. It is definitely worth visiting if you have booked flights to Alicante.

One of the traditions of the Virgen del Remedio festival is Alborada, an old choral concert. The entire city of Alicante lights up with this musical celebration two days before the festival and climaxes on the day of the festival. The concert is accompanied by some feasts which boast a bountiful array of mouth-watering Mediterranean and Spanish cuisines and a generous flow of wine.

What happens on the day of the festival is a flower-offering to the matron saint and a long procession with the locals bearing the image of the Virgin around the city amidst music and dancing. This colourful procession always proves to be an interesting one. It is a good opportunity to get drenched in the sun while you feed your eyes and your stomach with the variety of cuisines and special wines or cold beers served at some of the festival’s food halls. There are a lot of dancing and theatrical performances, fireworks and other wonderful activities which you might enjoy during this festivity.
