Antalya Airport Improvements

The operators of Antalya airport in Turkey, which acts as a gateway for tourists travelling to this part of the Turkish Mediterranean coastline, have announced a series of improvements including an improved domestic terminal which is set to open before the end of March.
Other improvements including a new heating plant and modifications to the apron and control tower. The new domestic terminal is aimed at helping turnover increase by 400 per cent and is part of wider improvements which also include a new power plant that is capable of providing almost all of the airport's power requirements, reducing its reliance on local supplies. The cost of all this work at the airport as been over 100 million euros and is part of the strategy that allowed the operating company to win its 17year contract to run the airport starting in 2007. Antalya airport will then have two international and one domestic terminal.
In 2006 passenger numbers through the airport were 16 million and this grew to 19 million in 2008. Passenger numbers did fall slightly during 2009, but were much better than expected due to the healthy state of the tourism sector in the area. The operators are expecting visitors to start increasing again in 2010. In its current form the airport is capable of handling up to 35 million passengers per year.
