One of the nicest settings to appreciate art on the island of Lanzarote is the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC). This interesting museum is housed in the old Castle of San Jose and was opened in 1975. The building itself is an unusual semi-circular structure built over 300 years ago to protect the town from invasion from the sea. This castle is situated to the northern side of Arrecife harbour and a similar building, the Castle of San Gabriel, sits on a sea wall at the other end of the town.
Cesar Manrique the famous artist and architect who built and transformed many buildings and installations in the Canaries, was involved in the creation of the MIAC museum, so you can expect things to be done with style here. The works in the museum's collection include pieces by Manrique himself, Cristino de Vera and Pancho Lasso.
During Spring and Summer this year, the museum is putting on a series of musical events, which continued in March with a performance by clarinet quartet Cuarteto Galanta on the 5th of March and the pairing of pianist Javier Diaz with violincellist Thomas Tytlak on the evening of the 27th March. Both concerts started at 9pm and ticket information was available from the museum itself.
The concert series continues through the season with two further performances in May and one in June. The programme of events at the museum also included three operas in March on the 12th, 13th and 30th, all started at 9:30pm.
