Zante is a great place to be during your vacation with several interesting places to visit. Right from the caves at Keri to the animal park at Askos, Zante has a lot to indulge in during your stay. Most major airlines such as Thomas Cook offer flights to Zante from every corner of the world. Visiting Zante is a must for people who love natural atmosphere, caves and monasteries.
Askos Stone Park is an enterprise that is run privately and was created in March, 2000. Visitors were not allowed immediately but since March, 2002 the park has been opened to tourists and visitors. The park covers as much as 124 acres and out of this only one fifth of the area is allowed for the tourists. The remaining area is reserved specifically for the animals to roam around freely in their natural habitat of the park.
There is some nominated area that is utilized for producing natural food for the animals. The food is termed natural as it does not entail mixing any fertilizers or even chemicals to ensure better growth. There are other smaller areas used for cultivating fruit bearing trees. Jams and various sweets are made from these fruits. The park is a beautiful haven for nature lovers and gives a kind of freshness because of the wide variety of flora and fauna found here. Some of the trees grown here, such as the Olives, date back to 600 years. People from several generations have toiled here to convert it into something so special.
It is a great opportunity to see the various wild animals in their natural habitat such as insects, hawks, different types of birds and amphibians. People in the past have got hold of certain unique trees that were not naturally grown here such as apple and peach, but these trees have adapted themselves to be able to grow in a healthy way.
The same is the case with animals that were not to be seen several decades ago. These animals include raccoons resembling the ones found in North America, squirrels, small framed goats, chinchillas and sheep found majorly only in Africa. It is indeed a great place to be with young children. They will learn a whole lot of things that they otherwise find boring and dull.
An endangered species of deer called platonia has successfully been bred here. Moreover, they have no harm here and are out of any artificial factors influencing their natural living. The park is covered by fences and is supervised end to end to provide optimum security to its inhabitants. Overall the park is truly worth a visit, especially if you are planning a trip with children.
