Autumn Festivals on Kefalonia

The harbour at Fiskardo on the greek island of Kefalonia

As the summer parties and cultural festivals came to an end, the island of Kefalonia continued to entertain its visitors with several artistic celebrations.

Towards the end of August the Eorti cultural events culminated in the town of Sami. This is possibly the biggest cultural event on the island and is held across several weeks in this picturesque harbour town. The full event schedule included, as you might expect, a selection of traditional Greek dance and music performances. There was also art exhibitions, athletic competitions and a variety of theatre performances. Close to Sami are the two monasteries of St Phanedon ( now ruins) and the monastery of Theotokos Agrilia with its dominating tower and colourful internal frescoes. The latter is certainly worth a visit.

In August the festival of Panagia took place around September the 8th at various places around the island including Fiskardo. This celebration of the feast day of the Virgin Agrilia included music and dancing, together with local traditional food and drink. Fiskardo is around 35 miles north of Argostoli and is often regarded as one of the most authentic Kefalonian villages on the island, given that it suffered the least damage during the earthquake of 1953. The harbour serves a dual role as a base for the local fishermen as well as a starting point for various boat cruises available for visitors.

In Lixouri, the second largest town on the island, a music festival started on the 11th of September and ran for three days featuring a combination of modern and traditional musical performers. This was a relatively small event with most performers being local groups, but as always was lot of fun and a great event for younger people.
