Banjuls climate is subtropical characterized by two distinct seasons out of which one is dry and the other is rainy. The most appropriate time to go on a vacation to Banjul falls between November to April, when the sea shores are most lively and sunbathing is something you will definitely enjoy. Banjul has an airport of its own and flights to Banjul are quite regular. Many European airlines fly to Banjul since the time tourism has gained momentum.
There is a beautiful tourist destination in Banjul named Bakau. It is situated towards the north of the District named Kombo. Bakau encompasses the quieter area around Cape Point. New Town, Sait Matty Road and the Old Town happen to be the livelier areas in Bakau. It is a mix of affluent seaside homes, supermarkets, working class areas, restaurants and bars. The busiest part of the town is Gamtel and the Post Office. Followed by this is the road that leads to the Garba Jahumpa Road.
Bakau consists of a Botanical Garden often missed out by most visitors of Bakau. Make sure you dont miss it as it is in an enclosed area that has a chain fence located to the north side of the Atlantic Road. This is the area where the craft market almost ends. As you explore this region more you will realize that it consists of several marked shrubs and trees that are actually indigenous to the town. It also has a nature trail and shaded seating for visitors.
Its a good idea to carry your binoculars along as you may bump into some cordon bleu with red cheeks. Finding the odd cattle egret or bronze manikins is also a possibility. Its a great place to relax and more so if you start off in the morning and want some rest in the noon. The botanical gardens remain open on all days of the week apart from Sundays. The timings are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the entrance fee is 50 dollars per head.
There are 2 markets at Bakau that are located just one after the other and fall right on the coastal Atlantic Road. The craft market is a great place to visit especially if you wish to take a locally made item as a souvenir of this wonderful town. These two markets are full of some stalls displaying wood crafts, batiks and beads. Bakau is a good combination of tradition, relaxation and a whole lot of fun.
