Banjul- The Gambia Part 1

Banjul, the capital city of The Gambia is known for the its relaxed and welcoming vibe. Besides being a friendly place to visit, The Gambia has a tropical feel to it. There is a genuine charm about The Gambia, radiated by the people and the very uncommercialised atmosphere. It's an alluring place for those in search of an exotic holiday in an unspoilt part of the world, all within an affordable price.
Banjul's history dates back to the fifth century. It was under British rule in the 19th century and was used as a trading post and as a flash point for suppressing the slave trade.
Today, Banjul is bustling city located on the tip of St Mary's island, on the Atlantic Ocean with a very busy port. You can explore the city on foot, as it's easily walkable. Alternatively, you can hire a 'tourist taxi' for a fixed price from most hotels, including wait-and-return if required. On the main roads you can grab a 'local taxi' which operate like buses and cover fixed routes. From the marina and port, you can take a river ferry to see some of the area which often feature mangroves or wild crocodiles drifting along the river.
The perfect time to visit The Gambia is from November to March when the sun shines daily and temperatures are around 27 degrees most days. The summer season tends to be wetter but also very sunny, too.
The Gambia is compact enough to explore during a week's stay here and it is a nature lover's paradise as most of the attractions are outdoors in the African sunshine. Crocodiles, forest buffaloes, and antelope are just some of the animals you might see while touring the region.
Because The Gambia is still developing as a tourist resort, your money will go a lot further here in comparison to more developed destinations. Although more visitors are coming to The Gambia than ever, it is still a relatively quiet spot and the authorities have been careful to keep a tight control over development. There is a wide choice of high quality hotel accommodation and top class restaurants with excellent food on offer which is also good value for money.
The city itself is home to the African Heritage Museum as well as numerous bustling markets. The surrounding area boasts sunny beach resorts as well as nature reserves and national parks.
