If you want you can stay somewhere close to Bao Bolon as there are hotels located just on the beach of the Gambia River.
Bao Bolon is a protected natural reserve situated at the northern end of the Gambia River. The reserve spans about 85 sq. miles. It is known to be the largest nature reserve all over Gambia. The reserve is of international importance because the government has been a part of the Ramsar International Wetlands convention that had taken place in 1996. This convention re affirmed the significance of this enchanting place where visitors can indulge in bird watching all day long.
It consists of multifarious wetland habitats specifically for birds such as huge swamp mangroves, savannah forest, scrub, estuary, mudflats-salt and tidal, marshlands-freshwater, brackish water and creeks. The entire region makes for a significant breeding ground for fish because of the varied waterways and rice farming done by the local residents.
The various Avifaunas here include collared pratincole, little egrets, osprey, African fish eagle and goliath heron. In the wilder animals the region houses the Sitatunga, clawless otter, West African Manatee, Nile crocodile and hippopotamus. You might also bump into Gambian aardvarks, chameleons, hyena, Nile crocodiles, bushpigs, monitor lizards, warthogs, geckos, puff adders, green mambas and spitting cobras. One of the most beautiful sights here in Bao Bolon is the bottle nose dolphins which can be seen from a distance at the entrance of the Gambian river.
You can make the travel arrangements from the Department of Parks and Wildlife Management in Abuko. The best way to tour this region is hiring a boat from the Gambian river. It is an excellent place to be especially with family and children.
