Palma gives every visitor a brilliant experience because apart from its historically rich ambience it also boasts of a beautiful seafront. The historical centre in Palma is compact and remarkable with pedestrians all over its narrow streets. Palma is accessible by air and flights to Palma are almost every day. Like several other Spanish cities, Palma also offers a good mix of amazing cuisine, hotels, culture, history, nightlife and shopping.
Bellver Castle also called Castell de Bellver is a round castle on a hill close to Palma de Mallorca on the Island named Majorca. The castle was constructed in the 14th century for the King of Aragon, King James II. It was employed for military purposes in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today it is one of the most visit tourist attractions on the island.
As you go on exploring the castle, you will notice the way it has been maintained. It is extremely difficult to believe that the castle has been standing strong for about 700 years. The construction of the Bellver Castle was started in 1300 by Jaume and constructed by Pere Salva. He also happens to be the architect of Almudaina Palace. The castle is relatively different than several Spanish castles because of its round shape. It consists of 3 large towers that surround the central courtyard and there is an arch which stands in between this round shape. The courtyard consists of two levels, the ground floor with several arches in between, coupled with a flat roof and the second level has rib vaulting and Gothic style arches.
When you take a round all over the castle you will be able to compare contrasting styles. For several centuries the Bellver Castle was used in form of a prison. Jaume IIIs own widow as well as sons were kept here for most part of their lives. Today the castle contains museum of municipal history of Palma that keeps a track of the development of Palma city by keeping its artifacts and pottery belonging to from Spanish, Talaiotic, Arab and Roman periods.
The Castle was also used in form of a prison in 1950s, a time when several people were still being persecuted for their commitment and loyalty to the Republic while the Spanish Civil War was on from 1936 to 1939. Some evidences show that the number of executed prisoners in Spain total to 60,000, during the first decade of the dictatorship itself. Writer and intellectual named Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was also one of the people who was held a prisoner in the castle.
