Bodrum, formerly known as Halicarnassus, has a reputation for its unique holiday attractions with a fascinating mix of both modern and conventional qualities. This combination is responsible for many flights to Bodrum every year, making it the most visited and most attractive holiday resort on the Aegean coast of Turkey. If you are looking for more than just a beach holiday and Blue cruise, this is the best place to be.

Among the many attractions of Bodrum is its historical richness. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is one fascinating ruin to behold for its beauty and size. This mausoleum once housed a lot of statues, Urns and artefacts. Some of these artefacts now reside in the British Museum. This monumental tomb of King Mausolus, who ruled the kingdom for 24 years, was built around 353 BC. This structure was seen as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in ancient times until it was affected by a heavy earthquake in 1304 AD.

St. Peter's Castle, where the Bodrum Ballet Festival will take place in August, is one of the finest historical attractions of Bodrum. This Medieval, imposing structure with many towers and spectacular view overlooking the harbour, was built in the early 15th century. It is the home of a dungeon, chapel, museum and other remarkable chambers.

The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology is another prominent place to visit. Located in St. Peter's Castle, this Museum boasts of 14 exhibition rooms which display huge collections of ancient artefacts, amphora, glass, bronze, clay, and other antiquities which are excavated from several shipwrecks.

Rabbit Island is a beautiful archaeological ruin located in Gumusluk, a seaside village in Bodrum. This provides a great scenic view and historic walk for tourists. Its rock formations provide fun activities like rock jumping. Another well preserved ruin is Pedasa, which was once a prestigious city in the 5th century BC.

Bodrum Windmills is one of the important landmarks to visit. These ancient windmills, at the top of a hill overlooking the peninsula, were built in the 18th century. This landmark provides a sensational view for visitors, particularly at night.

Myndos Gate is yet another important historical landmark in Bodrum. These impressive ancient walls were built in 364 BC by King Mausolus and have witnessed the battle of Alexander the Great. The gates gave the solders of Alexander (the Great) a hard time entering Halicarnassus.

The Ancient Amphitheatre is a famous and remarkable landmark in Bodrum built in the 4th century BC. This theatre, with a 13000 sitting capacity, has hosted several cultural festivals and concerts during summer.
