If you think making sand castles is difficult, you will be left speechless by the Sand Sculpture Festival held every year at Burgas. Sand art has truly evolved from making simple sand structures on the beach to more professional works displayed on different occasions all over the world, Burgas being one of them. The festival is a must see if you are planning your holiday in the months of July-August. Flights to Burgas can be easily booked online through the Thomas Cook website.

Sand art is not very well known, where your knowledge may only be restricted to making castles on the beach. However, sand art is indeed a talent involving large amounts of sand and clay being converted into huge, complex structures. There is also a World Championship held in Canada, started in 1989.

The very first Sand Sculpture Festival in Burgas was held in 2008 with well known artists coming from Belgium, Indonesia, Russia, Netherlands, Ukraine, Latvia and of course, Bulgaria. It attracted more than 15,000 visitors from all over the world. The event is organized by Burgas Municipality and is aimed at promoting the art form as well as tourism in the region. The event involves use of more than 3000 tons of sand to create different structures both modern and ancient, fairytale and mythical figures and other contemporary pieces.

The sand sculpting festival is held near the Park Hotel located in the northern portion of Sea Garden Park in Burgas. The exact place where the sand sculptures are built lies between the horse riding centre and the tennis courts. The festival has a different theme every year for the artists to showcase their talent in the most innovative way possible. For instance, the theme for 2010 was Circus, where the artists made everything from a clown to jugglers using nothing else but sand.

Those of you who have tried to make sand castles would know how difficult it is to make the structure stand. It is quite mesmerizing to watch sand constructed into various forms, some even more than 8 meters in height. The way these figures are made is simply awe inspiring. Even if there are around 20 to 30 sculptures made during an event, the intricate carvings simply leave you amazed.

Every year the event is inaugurated by some well-known personality. For instance, one such festival was opened by the famous group Boney M. The festival is very well organized, where everything from security to food and drinks is taken care of by Burgas Municipality. So, add this event to your must-watch list on your visit to Burgas.
