When we think of Egypt, our minds automatically wander to vast deserts with ancient pyramids, mysterious belly dancers, snake charmers and camels. Yet when we disembark our flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, we are greeted by the hustle and bustle of a modern city. With its long, golden beaches, over 250 different coral reefs and more than 1000 species of fish, Sharm is a very rewarding holiday destination for those who are into sunbathing, scuba diving and snorkelling. But don't worry, Sharm is also the perfect starting point for living out your Indiana Jones fantasies.
Together with Naama Bay, Hay el Nour, Hadaba, Rowaysat, Montazah and Shark's Bay, Sharm el-Sheikh city forms a metropolitan area near the coastal strip of Egypt along the Red Sea. Many tourists go on quad biking day trips in the Sinai desert, but you might be looking for a more authentic activity. The most impressive way to experience the overwhelming desert scenery and silence is while travelling by camel, allowing the landscape to unfold gradually as you pass through it.
To enhance the Bedouin experience, many operators offer their clients a cup of herbal tea in a Bedouin tent after the camel ride. It pays to ask around what will be included, as some camel tour guides are even willing to show you how they bake their own bread, serve you a traditional meal, share a shisha pipe with you and play local Bedouin music while belly dancers show off their tricks.
Most daytrips into the Sinai desert are very reasonably priced. As tips usually aren't included, it's only polite to tip your guide. You can give him 10% of the price you paid for the trip. If you are invited in a Bedouin tent for a free meal or a cup of tea, you can also leave one or two Egyptian Pounds for the person serving the tea.
