Canaries come to Chelsea

Bird of Paradise Flower in Tenerife

Keen to showcase the natural and raw beauty of the their islands, the Canary Islands Tourist Board has sponsored a garden at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. The tourist board responsible for promoting the Canary Island Archipelago is working hard to maintain the strong ties between the island group and visitors from the UK. Tourists from the UK have always formed the majority of visitors to the seven Spanish islands located off the North African coast which include Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The concept for the garden was created by designers David Cubero and James Wong of Amphibiandesigns who won a silver medal last year for their display at the Hampton Court Flower Show and say they are passionette about the forgotten face of The Canaries. James Wong is the presenter of BBC TV's recent new gardening programme "Grow you own Drugs". David Cubero is a native of the Canary Islands and a former agricultural engineer, who trained as a floral artist in Madrid.

The modern garden, based on an outdoor spa, attempts to showcase the rugged and inspiring beauty of the volcanic islands using black lava rock, palm trees and native planting. A dramatic feature is the steaming thermal spring water which has been recreated using specialist equipement that is also used in the movie industry.

A floating pavillion is the centrepiece of the garden sourrounded by a moat.

The Canary Islands Tourist Board are very pleased with the garden which they hope will provide visitors with an idea of the stunning landscapes on the islands and unusual exotic flora and fauna that can be found.
