Jazz lovers will feel right at home in the Canaries this month, because the Heineken Jazz Festival (also known as Festival Canarias Jazz and Mas Heineken) will be hosted on Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria from 9th to 18th July 2010.
Arrecife is Lanzarote's bustling, friendly capital, and its 15th century maritime roots are apparent today. The skyline is dominated by the tallest building on Lanzarote, the Grand Hotel. The top-floor houses a restaurant with excellent views of the city. But Lanzarote is strictly regulated concerning building development. The style and amount of buildings must conform to local regulations which result in a lack of over development and more open spaces to better enjoy the sweeping vistas of this enchanting island.
Despite the volcanic origins of the island, Lanzarote has several beautiful white sand beaches such as Playa Blanca and Papagayo. It's also good to know that the ancient volcano is dormant and won't interfere with flights to Lanzarote.
Another fortress worth exploring is the Castillo de San Jose also in Arrecife. Built in 1799, it was used a a gunpowder arsenal. In the '70s, it was converted into a modern art gallery and restaurant, the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporaneao.
