If you are a resident of Spain you sure may be looking forward to the Carnival of Las Palmas, but if you are a visitor or going to visit Las Palmas, be ready to get shocked and enjoy it too. Gran Canarias party also called the carnival is a grand event of the year. It extends to 3 weeks at a stretch and starts before Lent. You can plan your vacation in Las Palmas in a way that you are able to attend the main events such as the popular Drag Queen Day held in January. Everyone in the Canary Islands is aware of this carnival and starts preparing much before the event approaches. The carnival is accompanied by a loud display of vibrant colors and enthusiastic crowds dressed up in various attractive costumes. The major events commence at the pre-determined location of Parque Santa Catalina. The location is renovated to accommodate pedestrians and has a huge stage for various acts and for the beautifully dressed dancers.

The events are extremely well planned and include beauty pageants and fancy dress parties. The beauty contest is called the Drag queen contest that has a unique theme every year. For instance, the theme for 2009 was Pirates. The contest is held to select a carnival queen, for which many women apply and participate. Apart from the carnival queen, there is a carnival queen held for children too. This is a specialty. This gives an opportunity to the little queens to display their talent and beauty to the audience. The audience could be from the Islands but most of them are from different parts of the world, who come here to have a Spanish experience of their life.

The elder lot need not be disappointed because there is a carnival queen selection for the elder women also. The fact that they have maintained their beauty for such a long time, people in Canary Islands respect them and admire their initiative to take part carnival queen. If you compare the costumes to your usual dresses you will find them to be quite outrageous and with each passing year you will find them to be even more astounding. On the other hand, the contest gets more competitive every year, each one trying to look as stunning and ravishing as possible. If you are lucky you will get to see some international artists performing their popular dance numbers to transform the atmosphere completely. Beauty contestants in platform heels, amazing costumes, fun filled parties and electrifying songs is what the carnival is all about.
