Flares, tie-dye clothes, platform shoes, kaftans, peace-signs and funky sunglasses - the theme for the 2012 carnival in Tenerife is Flower Power of the Swinging Sixties! If we could relive this brilliant era anywhere in the world, we could not have thought of a better location than the Island of Eternal Spring with its peaceful beaches and exotic flowers. The Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the biggest of the Canary carnivals and is always held during the weeks before Ash Wednesday. In 2012, the official dates are from 15th February until 26th February. If you're in Tenerife between these dates, look for a hotel near Santa Cruz, as this city will be turned into a magnificent circus of colours, costumes, music and light shows.

Fuerteventura Carnival

Fuerteventura hosts a large number of festivals and these are popular with a wide variety of people. There are a lot of people that use the flights to Fuerteventura as they can join in with the festivities. This carnival allows people to experience the party atmosphere of Fuerteventura. There are carnivals hosted within most of the cities, towns and villages throughout Fuerteventura that host their own carnivals and these take place between January and April. These carnivals all feature a range of musical, sporting and cultural events. Another event that forms part of all of these carnivals is a procession of floats that involves a wide range of wheeled vehicles, which are all colorful and most of them also play some type of music.

Crete Apokrias Carnival

Apokrias Carnival in Crete is celebrated to appease Dionysos, the God of Feast and Wine. Traditionally it is supposed to prepare the people for the 40 day fast or Lent, during which there is are no parties, weddings or celebrations of any kind. The carnival is held as a form of last time of celebration before Lent begins, when people are not allowed to have meat or drink wine. It is held over a period of three weeks filled with fun and festivities, more to compensate for the abstinence to be held during the 40 day fast.
