Summer in Skopelos

Skopelos Town

Skopelos island is part of the Sporades islands in the Aegean Sea to the east of mainland Greece. The Sporades islands offer travellers a different atmosphere to the usual Greek island getaways. Instead of bare hills and packed villages, the Sporades are pine forested and feature some of the best beaches along the Aegean. What is more striking is the difference in architecture that is less whitewashed and features stone roofs. Skopelos is known for its exceptionally gorgeous beaches, hidden away coves and crystal blue water. The capital city is charming and was built around a bay in an amphitheatre design.

Horse Races on St George's Day

Saint George's Flag

Happy St George's Day, England! The 23rd of April has been a national feast day since 1415, after the Council of Oxford declared this date to be St George's Day and after St George replaced Edward the Confessor as England's patron saint in the 14th century. His emblem is a red cross on a white background, which is incorporated in the British flag, so you'd think that it's safe to assume that he's a typically English Saint.

The building itself is an unusual semi-circular structure built over 300 years ago to protect the town from invasion from the sea. Medieval Knights in Rhodes Festival

St Johns Castle Towers in Rhodes

The town of Rhodes owes much of its wonderful architecture to the Knights of St John who came to the island in 1309 and built their dwellings, fortifications and churches on the remains of structures left by previous Roman and Byzantine rulers. In 1291 the Knights had been forced out of Jerusalem and after a brief, unsuccessful period in Cyprus, they selected Rhodes as their new domain. The initial years on Rhodes, and some other small islands that also formed part of their occupation, were not entirely peaceful and some disquiet saw the knights attempt to assassinate their leader. Grand Master Foulques de Villaret, had instigated the conquest of Rhodes, but found himself seeking refuge in the castle at Lindos on the island, while another Grand Master was appointed to replace him.
